Brietta & Franz

Often times, a couple will meet with me and want to do a “cool” engagement shoot, but then expect me to do all that creative work, by reaching into my magic hat of photo tricks and ideas to make them look spontaneous and inspired. Psst. Here’s the secret. The couples with the most awesome engagement shoots are the ones who come to the table with their own awesome ideas. Then it becomes a true collaboration, and I absolutely, positively love it. It’s their vision, and I do my best, utilizing my skill set, to help them realize it.

Brietta and Franz had a strong, cohesive vision for their shoot. Inspired by the Wes Anderson film “Moonrise Kingdom.” They looked amazing, and absolutely nailed the props. Holy moly, just look at all the props they brought. Yes, they rented a canoe for the afternoon, and carried it down to the shoreline of the pond at Laurelhurst Park. That’s the most dedication from a couple I’ve ever seen to a concept for an engagement shoot. Seeing that effort, it was only appropriate that I matched that effort in kind from an image production end. It allowed me to totally nerd out photo wise on my end. Wes Anderson is a huge (huge) fan of symmetry in his composition – A lot like the late Stanley Kubrick. While I can’t claim to be nearly that precise, I did my best to tip my hat to that style for a number of the shots. The main element I focused on was the color treatment. Anderson shoots a lot on Kodak film, I did my best to work hard on a number of select images to emulate that style, and to bring up those warm tones. It’s all about those oranges, yellows, and greens. I’m really happy with how the shots turned out, and I forwarded those first few on to the editing team to mirror for the rest of the shoot.

I cannot wait to work with Brietta and Franz again. It is collaborating with two other fellow artists, and I cannot pay them a higher compliment.
